Unlocking net-zero

Carbon management refers collectively to carbon capture, use, and storage, which consists of capturing carbon dioxide emissions at a source such as an industrial facility, and carbon dioxide removal, which removes already emitted carbon directly from the atmosphere. In both approaches, the carbon is used in products and/or permanently and safely stored in a way that prevents it from being released.

Part of the essential mitigation technologies toolbox, needed to ensure global warming is capped at 1.5°C

Alongside the wide range of proven climate solutions that are needed to support the global journey to net-zero – including nature-based solutions, the elimination of net deforestation, and deployment of renewables and other forms of clean energy production – carbon management technologies are crucial to achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Driving the sustainable transition forward

The CMC takes into account the diverse and nuanced social, ecological and economic realities of countries and aims to support solutions that are aligned with varying national circumstances. Participants of the CMC have the ability to choose how to employ a versatile range of carbon management technologies, according to their aspirations and needs.

Carbon management technologies provide a range of options to support the sustainable transition, through reducing emissions, removing CO2 from the atmosphere, and supporting a new energy economy of low-carbon products and CO2 utilization.

Supporting government and industry to meet their climate goals

In cement and steel production, carbon management technologies are necessary to deeply decarbonize and align with international climate goals.

For unavoidable residual greenhouse gas emissions from sectors such as agriculture, shipping, and aviation, and to address historical emissions, the removal of CO2 directly from the atmosphere is needed.

Carbon management can also be a complementary component towards net-zero power generation, providing flexible low-carbon electricity to supplement renewable energy technologies.
